Cincinnati’s First Zika Case Reported

CINCINNATI (AP) – A middle-aged man who traveled to a Caribbean country in the spring has been registered as Cincinnati’s first case of Zika.
City public health officials are cautioning residents at the start of the Fourth of July weekend to take greater precautions against mosquito bites. Interim Health Commissioner Dr. O’dell Owens said Friday that residents should cover their skin and empty get rid of standing water, where mosquitoes can spread.
Officials say the city’s first Zika virus case was discovered in a man in his 50s who in May traveled to a Caribbean nation that’s a hot zone for the illness. They didn’t name the nation.
The case is the 21st that Ohio has seen since health officials alerted the public about the mosquito-borne illness earlier this year.
