COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s casinos have generated more than $1 billion in tax revenue since the first one opened in 2012, and just over half that money has gone to cities and counties.

The casinos in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo pay one-third of their gross revenue in taxes to the state, which distributes it.

New figures from the Ohio Casino Control Commission show about $538 million went to cities and counties. Ohio schools got nearly $359 million, or just over one-third of the tax revenue.

Each host city has received $52.7 million. The casino commission, the Ohio State Racing Commission, a fund to address problem gambling and a law enforcement fund all received smaller amounts.
