Vikings Blow Fourth Quarter Lead In Tourney Loss To Sheridan

The Sheridan Generals live to play another day as they defeated the Vinton County Vikings in shocking fashion, 38-37 on Wednesday night.
In each team’s first game in the 2014 district tournament, the No. 5 seed Vikings led by 10 points entering the fourth quarter, but the No. 4 Generals picked up the defensive intensity to start the quarter.
After a steal by Sheridan forward Dylan Dupler, guard Tyler Fisher pulled the game to even with 4:40 to go. Vikings forward Max Ward fouled out of the game a minute later, and Sheridan’s Luke Fox hit the following go-ahead free throws to make it 38-36.
With 50 seconds until the end of the game, the Generals turned the ball over, giving Vinton County a chance to win the game. However, a pick-and-roll play drawn up by Vikings coach Matt Combs was thwarted, and Dupler stole the ball from Tristan Bartoe to end the game.
Vinton County controlled the pace of the game on both sides of the court for the first three quarters, working a half-court offense consisting of low post moves by Chase Wood and Ward, both accumulating 10 points each. Point guard Jordan Albright pitched in 10 points of his own.
Sheridan kept within reach, though, behind the steady 3-point shooting of Fisher, finishing with 14 points and shooting 4 of 5 from behind the arc. The Generals trailed the entire game until Fox’s go-ahead free throws in the fourth quarter.
Sheridan moves on to play No. 1 Logan Elm on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at Logan High School.
