Longwood Trumps Ohio Twice In Doubleheader
< < Back to longwood-trumps-ohio-twice-doubleheaderGame One: Ohio pitcher Jake Roehn gave the Bobcats the best performance of his young career so far, throwing 8 2/3 innings and giving up just one run on five hits while striking out nine batters, but ended up as the losing pitcher.
Unfortunately for Roehn, his counterpart on the mound, Longwood’s Aaron Myers, gave an even better performance, holding Ohio to zero runs on just four hits. Myers led his Lancer squad to a 1-0 victory over the Bobcats in game one of the two teams’ doubleheader.
After a rough beginning to his Ohio career, Roehn has found a groove with his last two starts, combining for 14 2/3 innings pitched, allowing just two runs on nine hits, while collecting 18 strikeouts.
The Lancers used some ninth-inning magic to get the win in this game, as Brandon Delk led off the inning with a double, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by the next Longwood batter. After Roehn intentionally walked the next batter to set up a first-and-third with one out situation, Longwood’s Alex Lewis hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Delk from third base to score the winning run.
Ohio didn’t have many scoring chances in the game, but had a great opportunity to put some runs on the board in the seventh inning.
After a Mitch Longo single and a Jake Madsen walk, John Adryan moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, setting up a great scoring chance for Ohio. However, Austin Rieman and Nick Bredeson could not get the runners in, as Rieman grounded out to the pitcher and Bredeson struck out, stranding the runners and ending Ohio’s threat.
Longo once again led Ohio offensively, collecting three hits on the day, raising his batting average back over .500 for the season. He also collected his team-high fourth stolen base of the season.
Game Two: Saturday was not a good day for the men in green and white.
After dropping game one of their doubleheader with Longwood in heartbreaking fashion, the Lancers took game two as well, dominating the game from the start, defeating Ohio by a score of 7-1.
The Lancers’ (7-8) offense chased Ohio starting pitcher Jake Miller after just one inning, after tagging Miller for six runs on seven hits in the first. It marked the shortest outing of the season for an Ohio starter this year.
Ohio’s bullpen did a tremendous job to stop the bleeding in relief of Miller, collectively holding the Lancers offense to just one run on two hits while striking out six in seven innings.
However, Ohio’s offense could not find a rhythm against Longwood’s Brandon Vick, who allowed only one run on three hits in nine innings on the mound, marking the second complete-game of the day for the Longwood starting pitchers, as Aaron Myers threw a complete-game shutout in game one.
Ohio (3-8) scored its only run in the fifth inning, when Mitch Longo crossed home plate after Taylor Emody grounded into a fielder’s choice.
The Bobcats will be back on Sunday looking to even the series as the ‘Cats and the Lancers will play another doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 1 p.m. Freshman Jake Rudnicki gets the start in game one and sophomore Connor Sitz will start game two for the Bobcats.
