Marietta Takes Two In Sunday Doubleheader

Game One: The No. 12 Marietta Pioneers delivered a dominant performance Sunday in Port Charlotte, Fla., in the first game of their doubleheader.
Marietta breezed past the College of Wooster, 7-3, to deliver the first loss of the season to the Fighting Scots.
Marietta delivered four runs and three hits off of pitcher Zach Woullard in the bottom of the eighth.
The end of the order did much of the dirty work. Josh Ungerbuehler, Dylan Gracia, Ryan Hanahan and Christian Demko each acquired an RBI to carry Marietta’s lead to 7-1.
The Pios made some noise early, producing two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to Demko and Zach Bukiewicz RBIs.
Demko had a great day at the plate going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Marietta’s win over Wooster handed Jason Byers his second win of the season. Byers gave up just three hits and one run in the victory.
Game Two: The Pios continued their winning ways Sunday evening as they surpassed Salem State, 8-4.
The momentum began to really pick up in the bottom of the fifth for the Pios with runners on second and third. Roche delivered the fourth run of the game with an RBI single followed by another Marietta run off of a Vikings’ throwing error.
Christian Demko followed the lead of his teammates with a safety squeeze to send Roche home. Kevin Johnston then finalized the inning with an RBI single. The Pios knocked in four runs and three base hits alone in the bottom of the fifth to take a substantial 7-1 lead.
Salem State looked to make a run of its own in the top of the sixth loading the bases with zero outs.
The Vikings scored two runs thanks to a Ryan Beliveau RBI single and a Christian Herstine wild pitch to tighten the score, 7-3.
Beliveau tallied another RBI on the evening in the top of the eighth but the hope of a comeback was cut short by a Zach Bukiewicz RBI bunt single in the bottom half.
Although, it was the Vikings who went ahead first, Marietta responded right away, when they capitalized on an unearned run in the top of the second.
Josh Ungerbuehler smacked a leadoff triple and scored on a Clint Roche RBI groundout to tie the game, 1-1.
The Pios then took the lead in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single by Dylan Gracia.
Gracia had a phenomenal night at the plate going 3 for 5 with two RBIs.
The Pios’ win brings them to a 4-0 record, earning Herstine his first win of the season.
