Habitat For Humanity To Salvage Materials At Future Site Of Tim Hortons
< < Back to habitat-humanity-salvage-materials-future-site-tim-hortonsHabitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio will be given an opportunity to salvage materials from the former Pizza Hut building that will be demolished to make way for a Tim Hortons Cafe and Bake Shop in Athens, according to Habitat Executive Director Kenneth Oehlers.
Oehlers said he expects the "deconstruction" by Habitat to begin within the next few weeks.
Athens Code Director John Paszke said a demolition permit has been issued for the former Pizza Hut building on East State State.
However, before the demolition contractor begins work, Habitat will go in and remove materials that can be sold at its ReStore shop at 309 W. Union St. that sells used building materials.
Oehlers said that when Habitat does a deconstruction they typically remove doors, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, light switches, cabinets, counter tops and other items.
This will be the second time that Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio has done deconstruction of a commercial building. The first one was the former Captain D's building on East State Street.
Oehlers said a Habitat deconstruction saves landfill costs for the demolition contractor, and provides merchandise for the ReStore shop, with proceeds going to support Habitat housing projects.
In addition to the demolition permit, a city use permit has been issued for the Tim Hortons project, which now has all its required city permits, according to Paszke.
"They're ready to go," he said.
The Messenger has previously reported that a combination Tim Hortons/Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shop is planned for the new building that will be constructed at the former Pizza Hut site.
Also, as a result of the Tim Hortons project a proposal has been made to change traffic patterns at the Shoppes at Athens (the former Athens Mall), where the property is located.
