Winpigler Helps Marietta To Doubleheader Split
< < Back to winpigler-helps-marietta-doubleheader-splitMarietta Pioneer Chris Winpigler had the hot hand on Wednesday afternoon, as the junior led the Pioneers to a 4-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Mount Aloysius College.
Serving as a designated hitter in the game, Winpigler went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and one run. Winpigler’s success derived mostly from the sixth inning, when he doubled to left center and sent Josh Ungerbuehler home to extend the lead to 3-0. Ryan Hanahan followed Wingpigler’s lead with a sac-fly out to right field, sending Winpigler home. Hanahan’s RBI was the last of the game as the Mounties went straight down in the count in the top of the seventh inning to hand the Pioneers a win in game one of the doubleheader.
Marietta first made some noise in the second inning, after a Winpgler RBI and a home run in the third inning by Tim McCoy to give Marietta a 2-0 lead.
Hanahan and McCoy contributed an RBI each for the Pioneer victory.
Christian Hertine snagged his fourth win of the season, landing him at 4-1 overall. Tyghe Bowers of Mt. Aloysius extended his losing streak to three, leaving him at 0-3 on the year.
In the second game, a rally in the fifth inning by the Pioneers was not enough to solidify back-to-back wins against Mt. Aloysius. Marietta fell 5-4 to split the doubleheader.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off of a Mitch Geers RBI, but it was the fifth inning where they saw a glimmer of hope.
Christian Demko’s RBI double and run off of a wild pitch tied the game at 4-4. However, the Mounties were on top of their game all night and were able to pull away in the seventh inning off of a throwing error by Kordell Antill.
The Mounties found success against the Pioneers’ pitching staff, piling on 11 total hits. Right-fielder Connor Bowie led the way, going 3 for 4 with one run.
Demko and Geers had solid performances, as they went 2 for 4 and 1 for 2, respectively. Each added an RBI as well.
Marietta (13-7) returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against Muskingum University.
