To the tune of back-to-back shutouts, the Marietta College Pioneers took an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at home against Capital University.

Game 1

Jason Byers threw eight innings of one-hit shutout baseball to lead the Pioneers to a 5-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, continuing what has been an outstanding sophomore season.

Byers earned his seventh win of the season and has yet to lose a game. He has a 2.25 ERA during the 2014 campaign and has struck out 62 batters in 64 innings.

Ryan Hanahan led the Marietta offense in game one by going 2 for 4 and accounted for more than half of the Pioneers’ runs, two RBIs and a run scored.

Game 2

Mike Finlan threw his first complete game of the season to help lead the Marietta Pioneers past Capital by a score of 6-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Finlan struggled in his previous three outings, giving up three or more runs and not lasting more than five and two-thirds innings. Today, he gave up zero runs, no walks, and just six hits while striking out five.

Wednesday’s game was Finlan’s best start since the Pioneers were at the Snowbird Classic in early March, when Finalan came just one out away from a complete game.

Josh Ungerbuehler was the offensive star of game two. Ungerbuehler went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI.

Marietta looks to continue its two game winning streak when they travel to Ada, Ohio, to take on Ohio Northern University in a Ohio Athletic Conference battle on Friday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
