Sibs’ Weekend Sees Fewer Problems for 2017

An increased police presence, a wealth of activities and a smaller crowd following the cancellation of a concert headliner, made for a calmer Sibs’ Weekend this year.
Sibs’ Weekend is a staple tradition of the Ohio University, usually occurring the first weekend in February. The weekend draws siblings, other relatives, and alumni to the bricks of Ohio University, encouraging them to get a taste of college-life. This year was no exception.
Some student resident assistants, charged with keeping the peace in dorms, said the number of reportable incidents was down this year requiring fewer write-ups. Siblings and other relatives are encouraged to spend the weekend in residence halls with their family members. In past years, this has not ended well with some siblings getting into trouble with marijuana or alcohol violations. Resident assistants made rounds of their buildings at 10 p.m., 12 a.m., and 2:30 a.m., and because of the reduced number of violations, and increased police patrols, RA’s all over campus had easier loads during the weekend event.
Contributing to this year’s quieter event was the cancellation of Migos as the headliner for the annual Sibs’ Weekend concert. Last year’s T-Pain concert drew not only siblings and area residents, but students from other Ohio schools. Many were hoping for the same this year, but Migos’ early cancellation seemed to cause a decline in attendance.
Sib’s Weekend has been around for over 30 years, drawing larger crowds each year as the university admits larger classes. Many siblings, cousins, and even alumni come from across the country to spend the weekend with their loved ones. As in past years, several alumni chapters provided transportation from major cities in Ohio, giving more opportunities for siblings to get to Athens from cities like Cleveland and Akron while also benefiting a local scholarship program.
Student organizations planned several events for siblings of all ages. Everything from a petting zoo and basketball games, to rap concerts and parties greeted students, family members and friends visiting the Athens campus. The Ping recreation center also provided entertainment, keeping the rock-climbing wall open for extended hours, and hosted Outdoor Pursuits’ trips to scenic hiking, star gazing, and zip lining.
