VIDEO: Variety, Volume At Lobsterfest 2014

Ohio University’s All-Campus Radio Network hosted its annual Lobsterfest last weekend, hosting a diverse group of acts from the East Coast, the Midwest and in the case of headliner Deerhoof, from California.
The event, organized and run by ACRN’s Promotions Director Shane Riley, featured acts who were dispersed at different uptown venues throughout the weekend.
The festivities started Friday, April 25 at Casa Cantina with Athens' melodic punk outfit Ghost Stories, followed by a contrast of sounds, varying from noise-heavy experimentation to pleasant folk.
Night two at The Union was a darker experience, literally and figuratively. The lighting in the bar complemented an emotional set of acts and an entranced audience.
Black Dice, a group closely related to Animal Collective, traveled from New York City to take the stage toward the end of the evening.
Deerhoof performed Saturday afternoon at Central Venue. Since 1994, the noise-pop group has been known for their stage presence, and certainly brought it along with them to Athens, performing their hits and offering the mic up for crowd members to sing-along.
Opening for Deerhoof was an equal amount of straight-ahead rock bands and noise-makers, all bringing something unique and special to the festival.
On Saturday night, The Smiling Skull hosted an "after show" of heavy punk music, including Cincinnatti’s GAZER and an incredibly heavy New England Patriots from Massachussetts. The Skull was packed.
For many, Lobsterfest 2014 was the end of an era. Two bands, heavily influential in the Athens do-it-yourself scene, performed for the last time: Frankie Teardrop and Small Steps, both of which have graduating OU seniors as members, called it a day at the end of the show.
