Ohio Gets Mixed Results in Friday’s Doubleheader

Two games at Akron on Friday saw two different results for the Bobcats, but one aspect was constant: strong Ohio pitching.
Game One
Morgan Geno singled up the middle for the Bobcats with two outs in the bottom of the first. That first hit was the only one for Ohio, in its 1-0 defeat.
Three batters reached base for the Bobcats and each runner came alone in an inning. Lexie Handley was dominant in the circle for the Zips. Danielle Stiene was just as masterful for Ohio, though.
The Zips and Bobcats battled scoreless for five full innings. Alexa Holland walked with two outs in the sixth inning. Geno followed with a ground out and one of Ohio’s three runners was erased.
In the bottom of the frame, Akron struck.
Stiene walked the leadoff batter Ashley Sims and Alyssa Nicholas followed with a single. With Stiene in trouble, Savannah Jo Dorsey went to the circle in relief to face Savannah Fruin. Fruin leads Akron in Runs Batted In and increased her lead after singling in Sims. After giving up the single, Dorsey struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
Akron led 1-0 and never looked back. Ohio’s last three batters lined, popped and flied out to end the game.
Dorsey would return to the mound for the second game and her teams’ bats would come with her.
Game Two
Akron fell 7-1 to the Bobcats in the second game of the doubleheader.
Playing copycat from the first meeting, it was Akron’s turn to manage a single base knock.
Scoreless until the fourth inning, Ohio’s bats finally did some damage to the Zips. Madison Claytor scored Mikayla Cooper with a sacrifice fly, earning Ohio a 1-0 lead.
Ohio’s play continues when MacKenzie Brunswick, Casie Hutchinson and Taylor Saxton loaded the bases with three consecutive singles. Alex Day scored all three with a bases clearing double, but Day was thrown out advancing to third base to end the inning. The ‘Cats still led 4-0.
Ohio tacked on three more runs in the fifth and seventh innings. With Dorsey pitching, though, it was all extras.
Dorsey allowed just one run, an unearned score in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Schlosser reached base on an error and stole second base. Sims singled for Akron’s only hit and scored Schlosser.
Dorsey earned her sixteenth win after allowing the one unearned run on one hit with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
Ohio (27-12) and Akron (18-22) finished the series with a game today.
