‘Cancer Sucks’ 5k To Be Held At Hocking College July 19
< < Back to cancer-sucks-5k-be-held-hocking-college-july-19The fourth annual Cam & Sue Cancer Sucks 5K Run/Walk will be held at Hocking College this month to remember two Athens County residents who lost their battle with cancer and to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
The race, which will be held July 19 at 9 a.m., was designed to honor the memories of Cameron Brown and Susan Ipacs. Cameron was the 9-year-old son of Lori and Eric Brown of Guysville. He was first diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at the age of 4. He underwent five years of chemotherapy and two bone marrow transplants before succuming to the disease on Oct. 30, 2008.
Ipacs died on Oct. 21, 2010, seven months after she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Her tumors were treated with gamma-knife radiation twice, whole brain radiation, and chemotherapy, but after five months, she was referred to hospice. She was 56-years-old, the associate dean of nursing at Hocking College and was taken away from her husband of 23 years and her three children, two of whom were young college students.
Proceeds for the 5K will benefit the Leukemia Research Fund at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Be The Match (the national bone marrow donor program), the Susan Ipacs Nursing Legacy Scholarship at the Foundation for Appalachian ohio and the Melanoma Research Foundation.
All participants who register by Monday will receive a free T-shirt on the day of the race. Adult registration is $20 prior to Monday and $25 after. Registration for children is $10. If received by Monday, children will also receive a complimentary T-shirt. Strollers are welcome, but no bicycles or rollerblades.
