Solich Taps Vick To Start Week One
< < Back to solich-taps-vick-start-week-oneOhio football coach Frank Solich said Monday morning during a conference call that Derrius Vick will start at quarterback for the season opener Saturday at Kent State.
Vick, a redshirt junior, has been splitting first team reps with sophomore J.D. Sprague throughout fall practice. The two are competing to replace former Bobcat Tyler Tettleton, who led Ohio to three bowl appearances in the last three years as a starter.
Solich said during the call that both quarterbacks will play Saturday and an early mistake will not necessarily be cause to pull Vick from the game.
Vick played in 11 games last season, recording 277 passing yards and a touchdown. He also ran 30 times for 67 yards and a score.
In his only career start, a 44-10 win over Norfolk State on Sept. 22, 2012, Vick completed 14 of 20 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns.
Sprague is listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, while redshirt sophomore Greg Windham is listed at No. 3.
Solich will speak in his weekly press conference at 12:15 p.m.
