Ghosts, Kelly Anne Blevins

Pittsburgh artist Kelly Anne Blevins will be exhibiting her artwork at the Ohio University Eastern Art Gallery Sept. 2-18. A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibit Activated by Charcoal: Drawings by Kelly Anne Blevins will showcase her talents in the discipline of drawing and her signature cryptic style of art.

“The intention of this exhibit is to project an atmospheric personality that creates an experience of thought and feeling,” said Blevins. “Realism allows me to convey a vulnerability, strength and metamorphosis through a cryptic signature that expresses an ultimate fragility to all life. Charcoal provides the ability to make permanent marks, and with each stroke there is a commitment to the likeness of my subjects.”

Blevins’ favorite drawings include Ghosts and My Frederic Chopin Dream. According to the artist, Ghosts is a representation of how physical, emotional and mental abuse can affect someone, leaving a 'ghost' or an imprint in their life from the experience.

My Frederic Chopin Dream began from a recollection of her past.

“When I was young, I had dreams of becoming a musician,” she said. “My first musical influence was Chopin, and, as a result, I taught myself to play the piano. Due to personal circumstances, this dream naturally evolved into making art and My Frederic Chopin Dream is a tribute to my mother and my love of music.”

Blevins’ work has been shown in both individual and group displays throughout the U. S. including exhibits in New York, N.Y.; Alief, Texas; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Richmond, Va.; Monroe, La.; Woodstock, Ill.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Pittsburgh, Pa.

The artist’s works have also been shown internationally as well, with previous publications in York, United Kingdom, and Helsinki, Finland, to her credit. Her entire collection can be viewed at www.kblevins.com.

Blevins credits her personal experiences and educational background as major influences on her work. She was born and raised in Tucson, Ariz., graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and is now working out of her studio in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Blevins is looking forward to the exhibition at the Eastern Campus.

“I wanted to bring a body of work to an academic environment to exhibit not only my drawings, but to show the student body what you can do as an artist,” she said. “I am hoping to share my experience through the show to inspire new talents and the appreciation for the arts.”

The Ohio University Eastern Art Gallery is located on the second floor of Shannon Hall and is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is free.
