Ohio Women Start Season With Win
< < Back to ohio-women-start-season-winThe Ohio Bobcats women’s basketball team was only one 3-point field goal made away from tying a MAC record for most 3-pointers made in a game.
Hannah Boesinger had six of those and didn’t even lead the team Friday night. Preseason second team all-MAC guard Kiyanna Black went 7-for-13 from behind the arc.
Overall, Ohio had 17 three pointers made, with 18 being the MAC record; the team shot 48 percent from deep. Ohio won the game 111-60, with Black and Boesinger scoring 25 points each. Quiera Lumpkins did her part scoring 19 and gathering 13 rebounds, the first double double for the Bobcats.
Ohio also dominated defensively, holding Murray State to 23 percent from the field, and 18 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Bobcats also outrebounded the Racers 58 to 41.
Ohio came into the game confident, but started slow. It took over two minutes to register the first points of the year. After the first media timeout, the Bobcats really started to roll.
The team took an 18-9 lead going into the second media timeout. From there, Ohio took control of the game, building a 62-27 lead by the end of the first half. Boesinger made all five of her first-half 3’s. Coach Bolden had this to say about her hot start,
“Obviously 5-for-5 (from three) was very surprising, but they were open shots,” Ohio coach Bob Boldon said. I don’t think this surprises any of her teammates, as they worked hard to give her the basketball.”
The Bobcats eclipsed the 100-point mark with 4:50 left in the second half. It was the first time since 2004 that the team has scored over 100. With less than two minutes left in the second, Ohio was up 105-58, and ended up winning 111-60 to advance to one and zero on the season.
“I thought we did very well tonight. Obviously there are some things we need to work on,” Boesinger said. “Today things seemed like they just clicked, our shooting was on, we made a lot of our free throws, and we rebounded well. Everything just worked out really well, and we’ve been working hard all season just to get these wins and get ready for the MAC.”
“We’re gonna try to take away people’s strengths,” Boldon added. “It’s gonna look a little bit differently from game to game and how we do things. We’re gonna try to take away what teams do well as best we can.”
