Williamstown Advances With Shutout Victory
< < Back to williamstown-advances-shutout-victoryThe saying is “defense wins championships,” and the Williamstown Yellow Jackets showed that their defense just might be good enough to carry them all the way.
No. 6 seed Williamstown shut out No. 11 Pendleton County 24-0 Saturday afternoon in the first round of playoffs. It was the exact showing that the Yellow Jackets were looking for to open their road to states.
After a scoreless first quarter, Williamstown didn’t waste time as it scored two plays into the second quarter on a Dakota Watson rushing touchdown. From there, the Yellow Jackets never looked back.
Defensive back Hunter Neely led the Williamstown defense with two interceptions, the first one coming with a minute left in the first half and in the red zone to preserve the Jackets' 7-0 lead.
Pendleton’s quarterback Timothy Hevener had a tough day, dealing with constant pressure in the pocket, and ball hawks like Neely covering all the passing lanes.
Williamstown tacked on a field goal to go up 10-0 at the end of the third quarter. With 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter Dakota Watson scored for the second time in the game on a 20-yard run to put the Yellow Jackets up 17-0.
Williamstown scored once more in the fourth to go up and 24-0.
The loss ends the Pendleton Wildcats year after a successful seven win season. The Yellow Jackets move onto the next round and look to achieve a double-digit win total.
