Late Surge Can’t See Fed Hock Girls Past Southern
< < Back to late-surge-cant-see-fed-hock-girls-past-southernThe Federal Hocking Lady Lancers were looking to get their first win as they invited the Southern Tornadoes to D.C Mclnturf Gymnasium on Monday night.
Southern's numerous scoring surges proved to be too great for the Federal Hocking squad to overcome as the Lady Lancers dropped their second game of the season, 58-53.
The Tornadoes were dominant for much of the game, as they held 12-point leads on two occasions, but Fed Hock managed to cut it to less than five both times.
Southern's offense was carried by the play of Faith Teaford and Cierra Turley, who scored 37 of the team's 58 points. Teaford showed that she could make her presence known with or without the ball as she tallied 21 points, six rebounds and six blocks. Turley added 16 points and four steals.
After a slow first quarter, the Lady Lancers picked it up as Carley Tabler started to find her shot. Tabler finished with 17 points and four assists. Megan Thompson chipped in with 18 points and prevented second chance points by being active on the boards. They carried that momentum into the second half as the Lady Lancers tied the score at 44 with under 3 minutes left in the game.
The action slowed down a bit as the two teams exchanged free throws in the closing minutes. But with 50 seconds left in the game, it was the Lady Lancers who found themselves trailing by a single point. And in the end, turnovers, critical missed free throws and the loss of defensive rebounds came back to haunt Fed Hock.
The Lady Lancers coach, Jeremy Tolson, elaborated on the two tight losses his team has endured this season.
“We’re a young team, I really think we’re playing very hard and weren’t not an easy out for anybody," he said. "I think we’re playing better and we’re gonna get over that hump.”
Tolson is hoping to improve on the Lady Lancers' last season record of 6-16, but his team hasn't quite found a way to put it all together yet.
The good news for Tolson is that his team has much of the season to find that chemistry, and with a trip to South Galilea (0-1) on the schedule for Thursday, it could be a quick turnaround for the Lady Lancers.
