Ky. Clerk Hoping For Re-Election Denies Unfair Treatment Claims

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Running for re-election, a Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses after gay weddings became legal has told voters she did not treat anyone unfairly.
Republican Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis spoke at a candidate forum Tuesday night with her Democratic rival Elwood Caudill Jr. Caudill said if he is elected he would treat everyone equally because he took an oath to uphold the law.
Davis said she treated everyone equally because she stopped issuing all marriage licenses in the summer of 2015 shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling effectively legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.
Her office resumed issuing marriage licenses once her name was removed from the form. The state legislature later permanently removed county clerks’ names from marriage licenses.
