Joe Policastro Trio Brings ‘Screen Sounds’ to Weasel Boy Brewing Nov. 8

Chicago-based jazz bassist Joe Policastro discovered his love of music not through his beatnik dad’s beaten up Mingus albums or through some lifelong fascination with the sophistication of jazz music; but through the unlikely teachers of TV and mainstream movies.
“Movies and TV were kind of my gateway to music; I’m from Cincinnati, and there wasn’t any music in schools or anything,” said Policastro in an interview with WOUB, about a year after his band, the Joe Policastro Trio, released Screen Sounds, an album of tunes gleaned from everything from television shows to songs from the silver screen. “On Screen Sounds, we do the theme song to Taxi; and I remember being a little kid and hearing that and (the theme to) Hill Street Blues, and thinking those were just cool sounds. I didn’t know what style of music they were — I had no reference point.”
The trio covers some much beloved territory on the album, including Angelo Badalamenti’s “Twin Peaks Theme” from David Lynch’s iconic surrealist mystery TV series; Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin'” from the 1968 film Midnight Cowboy; “Cool Hand Luke (Main Theme)” from Stuart Rosenberg’s 1967 prison drama featuring Paul Newman, and eight other famous sounds from our favorite screens.
On Thursday, November 8, the trio will bring their sounds to the Weasel Boy Crewing Company (126 Muskingum Ave., Zanesville), with the show starting at 8 p.m. Listen to WOUB’s interview with Policastro, embedded above.
