Sun June II Gladden House Sessions 2019

Laura Colwell and Stephen Salisbury, the founding members of Austin, Texas-based band Sun June, met while working in Terrence Malick’s esteemed film editing studio. The idea of forming a band had never crossed their minds until they started playing around with the various instruments laying around the studio. Between editing for films, when their boss was away, they spent their free time practicing, learning, and writing songs. In 2016, Justin Harris, Sarah Schultz, and Michael Bain joined to complete the current Sun June personnel.
The band combines lonely lyricism with equally lonesome, yet often infectious, soundscapes, crafting what they have coined as “regret pop.” Their 2018 Keeled Scales debut, Years, offers a crystallized vision of sonic angst translated through a buoyant pop-song writing sense.
Soothing us for the fourth session on Saturday, June 8, at the Gladden House, Sun June played four songs: “Young” (off Years), then “Monster Moon” from their 2019 EP Younger (Keeled Scales), followed by “Johnson City,” and closing with “Discotheque,” both off Years.
