PERRY CO., Ohio (WOUB) — Perry County has confirmed its first case of COVID-19.

Health Commissioner Angela DeRolph made the announcement on Tuesday in a Facbook video.

The patient is a 58-year-old woman who is now in isolation, according to DeRolph. She added the health department will reach out to anyone who has been in contact with the woman.

Residents should be thinking about how they will care for themselves, their families, and their pets if they contract the virus and need to be isolated.

DeRolph encouraged Perry County residents to stay home unless travel is essential, and reminded people to wash hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and cover their mouth if they cough.

She said the health department will continue sharing news and advice with residents.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed 2,199 positive cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, March 31 at 2 p.m.

The DOH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
