Athens Co. Confirms One New COVID-19 Case For August 20

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 369 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one new case was confirmed Thursday.

The Athens City-County Health Department confirmed the case in a press release sent August 20.

An analysis of Ohio Department of Health data indicates the new case involved a person aged 30-39.

There are 10 known active cases in the county as of Thursday. There are 357 recovered cases, according to the health department. A total of 21 people have required hospitalization due to COVID-19 symptoms in the county since the start of the pandemic. There have been two deaths related to COVID-19 in the county.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

A free pop-up testing site has been scheduled for neighboring Meigs County for Saturday, August 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drive-through event is taking place at the Meigs County Fairgrounds. No doctor recommendation is required and no appointment is necessary. You do not have to be a Meigs County resident to get a test.

Athens County remained at a Level 1 Public Health Emergency on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System.

Gov. DeWine released this week’s map during his press conference on Thursday.

The governor said statewide that there were nine red counties, the lowest number since the release of the advisory system.

The Ohio Department of Health announced 112,003 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide as of Thursday at 2 p.m. There have been 12,615 hospitalizations and 3,929 reported deaths.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
