The 100th COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 29 new cases for Dec. 17

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 100 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Friday. The county also has now had 8,673 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 29 new cases were added the same day.
The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the death and cases on Dec. 17, 2021.
Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person in their 30s, the first death in that age group.
According to ODH data, the cases involved eight people 0-19, seven people 40-49, six people 20-29, five people 60-69, one person 30-39, one person 50-59 and one person 70-79.
Four previously reported cases required hospitalization for a person 19 or younger, a person in their 50s, a person in their 60s and a person 80 or older. According to the data, 312 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
There are 389 known active cases in the county as of Friday and 8,184 recovered cases, according to ODH.
A total of 51.47% of the county has started the vaccination process and 48.10% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 11,788 additional doses administered.
Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.
There have been 92,195 hospitalizations and 28,028 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
- Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid contact with people who are sick.
