Two COVID-related deaths have been reported in Athens County, along with 179 new cases for Dec. 31-Jan. 3

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 104 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after two were added to the total Monday. The county also has now had 9,221 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 179 new cases were added between Dec. 31 and Jan. 3.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the deaths and cases on Jan. 3, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the deaths involved a person in their 30s and a person 80 or older.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 63 people 20-29, 41 people 0-19, 26 people 30-39, 18 people 40-49, 12 people 50-59, 12 people 60-69, four people 70-79 and three people 80+.

Two confirmed cases required hospitalization for a person 40s and a person in their 50s. According to the data, 318 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 562 known active cases in the county as of Monday and 8,555 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.02% of the county has started the vaccination process and 48.47% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 14,008 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Monday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 18,942 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported in the last 24 hours. There were also 350 hospitalizations  and 37 ICU admissions in the same time frame.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
