The Buckeye Trail Association Announces
10th Annual Winter Hike at Burr Oak State Park.
Glouster, OH–Today the Buckeye Trail Association announced that, in partnership with the Burr Oak State Park, Burr Oak Lodge, Burr Oak Getaways and Burr Oak Alive!, the 10th Annual BRRRRR Oak Winter Hike will be held at the Lodge on Saturday, February 12th with staggered starting times for the different hikes for COVID safety (9am, 9:30am, 10am and 10:30am). This free event is being hosted by the Little Cities of the Forest Chapter of the Buckeye Trail Association.
After the hike, lunch including corn bread, soup beans, and hot chocolate will be provided by Burr Oak Lodge free of charge to winter hikers. Burr Oak Lodge is also offering a special rate all weekend for winter hikers who wish to stay overnight. Prices are $89 for all rooms and $129 for the cabins.
There will be four hike options to give novices and seasoned hikers some variety:
1 mile, 3 miles, 5 miles and 8 miles.
- The 8 mile hike will begin at 9am, for those who are looking for a challenge!
- The 5 mile hike will begin at 9:30am, with a rugged path with scenic features including Buckeye Cave.
- The 3 mile hike will begin at 10am, with an easier path and focus on hiking.
- The 1 mile hike will begin at 10:30am. This interpretive hike will be led by Burr Oak State Park Naturalist Julie Gee. It’s perfect for those who want to take a slower pace.
Portions of the hike will follow Ohio’s Buckeye Trail and the white blazed Bob and Mary Lou Paton Trail. The trail hosts the 4,600 mile North Country National Scenic Trail and the 6,800 mile American Discovery Trail through this part of Ohio as well. Hikers will walk past forested hollows, impressive rock formations, and views of Burr Oak Lake while experiencing the hidden gem of Burr Oak during wintertime.
Participants are asked to meet at the Lodge 10 to 20 minutes before their hike time – no sooner and no later. To arrive at the Lodge, take the park entrance road left of the ranger station and proceed straight to the Lodge. Make sure to wear sturdy footwear and to bring a snack and water for the hike. The hike will take place rain, snow, or shine! Please be aware these hikes involve climbing up and down hills. Refreshments will be provided afterwards!
