< < Back to meigs-takes-home-a-win-against-athens-with-the-help-of-now-record-holding-mallory-hawleyPOMEROY, Ohio (WOUB) — Meigs entered tonight’s game looking to defend their home and see a new all-time leading scorer against Athens. Mallory Hawley came into the game needing only 14 points to tie the Marauders girls all-time leading scorer Amber Vinning.
The game started off sloppy with both teams taking turns turning the ball over to one another, Hawley was held to only two points, and the quarter ended with a tie score 12-12.
In the second quarter the scoring was stagnant until Bailey Davis hit back-to-back threes to give the bulldogs the lead, the Marauders responded with a 11-2 run led by Hawley who scored nine. By the end of the half Davis had hit four threes, Hawley had scored 11, and Meigs led 25-20.
At the start of the second half tension was rising as Hawley was only three points away from the record. Meigs opened with a tough mix of offense and defense that left Athens unable to make basic passes without fear of it being stolen. They used that to their advantage scoring easily on fast breaks.
After a one and one from the free throw line Hawley was only two points from the record and after a wide open three pointer fell the record had been broken. Hawley was embraced by her team and the fans as the game came to a stop so everyone could congratulate her for the achievement.
“I think it was a whole team excitement, they were just as excited for her as she is for herself.” Head coach Heath Hudson said about what the records means for the team “She knows she couldn’t have gotten there without all of them, and they know they’re apart of it as well.”
By the end of the third the Marauders had allowed only four points and led 44-24. In the fourth Athens gave their best shot at a comeback only allowing four points but Meigs would hold on to secure a win on the historic night 48-35.
Mallory Hawley ended the game with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals on 61% shooting while Bailey Davis ended with 20 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 three pointers made.
Meigs will take on River Valley Thursday while Athens has finished its conference play and will look forward to the playoffs.
