One COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 80 new cases for April 15-21

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 142 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had 14,617 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 80 new cases were added since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on April 21, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person 80 or older.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 41 people 20-29, 12 people 0-19, 11 people 30-39, five people 40-49, four people 60-69, three people 50-59, two people 70-79 and two people 80+.

There are 126 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 14,349 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.72% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.28% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 17,141 first boosters and 1,184 second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 6,890 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 428 hospitalizations, 19 ICU admissions and 94 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
