319 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for Aug. 29 – Sept. 1

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 17,629 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 319 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Sept. 1, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 112 people 0-19, 81 people 20-29, 30 people 40-49, 28 people 30-39, 25 people 50-59, 22 people 60-69, 13 people 70-79 and eight people 80+.

Two previously confirmed cases required hospitalization for a person in their 20s and a person in their 70s. According to the data, 366 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 637 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 16,843 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 53.32% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.59% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 18,269 first boosters and 4,549 second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 25,280 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 575 hospitalizations, 39 ICU admissions and 84 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
