The River Pilots started strong from the opening kick, returning the ball all the way to Barnesville’s 33-yard line. Barnesville’s defense was ready to go as well, forcing a Luke Detling interception. Detling was dominant on both sides of the ball, catching a deep pass from quarterback C.J. Hannahs, which set up a 9-yard rushing touchdown from Taison Starr.
The rest of the first half was all defense. After the teams exchanged a few punts, Barnesville was able to march down the field, where they were forced to attempt a 25 yard field goal. Kicker Evan Lough, however, doinked the kick off the left up-right.
Barnesville was able to hold onto their lead until the last minute of the second quarter, where wide receiver Brody Lollathin laid out to catch a deep pass in the back of the endzone. The game went into half-time tied at 7.
Barnesville came out swinging in the second half. A big kick-off return to start the third quarter set the Shamrocks up at mid-field, where Starr caught a deep ball from Hannahs, taking it to the house from 51 yards out.
Barnesville then recovered an on-sides kick, which set up another touchdown, making the score 21-7 with just under 10 minutes left in the third.
It did not take River long to respond, however, scoring just 59 seconds later, making it a one possession game. On the next drive, Luke Detling catches another one of C.J. Hannahs deep balls, scoring from 44 yards out. At this point, River QB Kabel Isaly gave up his second interception of the night.
Barnesville capitalized on the turnover, and Detling caught his second receiving touchdown of the night, despite a couple of penalties that backed up the Shamrocks. River scored once more with 7:55 left in the game, but it was too little, too late. Barnesville remains undefeated.
