Eastern overcomes Trimble for first time since 2000
< < Back to eastern-overcomes-trimble-for-first-time-since-2000Reedsville, OHIO (WOUB)— It was rocking in Reedsville Friday night as the Eastern Eagles took on the Trimble Tomcats. Eastern was hoping to change the script as they had not beat the Tomcats since the year 2000.
The Eagles won the toss and elected to receive. Their first drive sputtered after three plays and Eastern was forced to punt. Trimble would then do the same as they went three and out. The dominance on the defensive side of the ball would be a recurring theme through the game as both teams struggled on offense.
Eastern was able to take first blood as they took down the tomcats punter due to a bad snap and recovered the ball on the Trimble 24 yard line. Following the recovery the Eagles got it to the 15 yard line where Rylee Barret took it into the endzone. On the following drive the Tomcats busted an 80 yard pass play to Max Frank to tie the game right back up at 6-6.
On the following Eagles possession Lance Helsner busted a 67 yard rush bringing the eagles all the way down to the 3 yard line and Eastern quarterback Brady Yonker punched it in on the next play. At the end of the first quarter Eastern was on top 13-6.
Both defenses would then step things up yet again. Drive after drive both teams offenses would get stuffed. Then with 5:51 left in the second quarter Kam Smith just took the ball right out of the Trimble punt returners hands and took it all the way to the house for another Eastern touchdown. The score going into the half would be Eastern 20 Trimble 6.
The Tomcats would hope to turn things around in the third quarter and get themselves back into the game, but the Eastern defense had other ideas. Trimble quarterback Brandon Burnette would throw not 1, not 2, but 3 interceptions. The quarter would end Eastern 20-6.
The Eagles would capitalize onon the final interception to take a 27-6 lead over the Tomcats early in the fourth quarter. This would be the score until a turnover on downs for Eastern and Trimble would drive down the field and score to make it 27-14.
The game would end with the same score as Eastern knocked off Trimble to go to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference as the Tomcats would fall to 1-6 and 1-1 in the conference as well. Eastern would keep their hopes alive to win the conference, but would need help as a loss to Waterford would put them in a tie for the top.
Trimble hopes to right the ship as the defense held steady, but with 5 turnovers on the offensive side adjustments need to be made. The Tomcats will take on the Belpre Golden Eagles next week as Eastern will take on the South Gallia Rebels.
