Labor Union History and Local Holiday Shopping
December 10, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
$10 – $60Our guided, self-driven tour will begin at the Ora E. Anderson Nature Trail that is positioned atop the old railroad bed of the Hocking Valley Railway that served the coal mines surrounding Carbon Hill. As we walk along the scenic old railroad bed, which is now a crushed limestone path we will see numerous remains of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century railroad line.
The group will then drive themselves a short ways into the town of Carbon Hill where they learn about the birthplace of the early labor organization. Tyler McDaniel will share stories about the people who founded the town and the leaders of the community who fought for workers rights such as Christopher Evans.
The tour will end in Nelsonville, an 8 minute drive from Carbon Hill. Here we learn about the town’s history and connection to the labor movement. Participants are invited to visit the local shops and eateries for lunch and holiday shopping in the quaint town of Nelsonville.
