One COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 75 new cases for Jan. 6 – 12

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 156 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had had 19,414 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 75 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.
The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Jan. 12, 2023.
Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person aged 80 or older.
The new cases involved 16 people 50-59, 15 people 20-29, 12 people 70-79, 10 people 40-49, nine people 60-69, seven people 0-19, four people 80+ and two people 30-39.
There are 226 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 19,032 recovered cases, according to ODH.
A total of 54.07% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.42% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,272 first boosters and 9,259 second boosters and 9,068 updated boosters administered.
Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.
ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
- Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid contact with people who are sick.
