COAL GROVE, OHIO– Alexander, still searching for their elusive first win, traveled down to Coal Grove for a TVC-OVC battle. They showed flashes throughout the duration of the game, but it ultimately wasn’t enough as they fell to the Hornets 47-24.

A slow start to the game for both teams saw Coal Grove jump out early 5-0, before Kaylee Hudnall got the Spartans on the board with a 3 point field goal. Those three points would be the only points they scored in the first quarter, putting them in an early 17-3 hole as time expired.

The second quarter saw much improvement defense. The Spartans were able to hold the high scoring Coal Grove offense under 10 points, however, they didn’t do themselves many favors on offense, only scoring 8. Hudnall was once again a big factor in the second quarter on offense, as she was able to help her team keep the game within 15 points heading into halftime.

Hoping to see some halftime adjustments on the offensive side of the ball, the Spartans kept looking Hudnall’s way. However, she was not able to find much luck, as Coal Grove’s defense caught on and put immense pressure on the ball when it was in her hands. Alexander was only able to muster up 2 total points in the 3rd quarter, as they entered the 4th staring up at a 20+ point deficit.

Despite only totaling 13 points through the first 3 quarters, the Spartans were able to show some flashes in the 4th, as they went on a 9-0 run behind Hudnall and Karah Allison, who was able to drain a 3 point field goal to cap it off. McKenna Moore was able to assist in the run by using her height to her advantage, grabbing a couple of rebounds to keep possessions alive.

When it was all said and done, the Spartans had a much better second half, as they were able to hold Coal Grove to a less impressive showing than the first, only totaling just over 20 total points. The offense was also able to get things going a lot more, especially in the 4th, where they saw their most production behind that 9-0 run.

The Spartans will look to grab that first win on Monday when they head back home to take on conference rival Vinton County.
