51 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County from March 24-30

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 20,119 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 51 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on March 30, 2023.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 16 people 20-29, 10 people 80+, seven people 70-79, six people 30-39, five people 0-19, four people 40-49, two people 50-59 and one person 60-69.

There are 112 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 19,849 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 54.18% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.50% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,435 first boosters and 9,593 second boosters and 9,739 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 6,354 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 305 hospitalizations, 17 ICU admissions and 49 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
