E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and Ohio University Libraries salute to D-Day journalists
June 6, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
FreeNormandy Park near the Richland Avenue roundabout was established by former D-Day correspondent, journalism school director and communication college dean John Wilhelm to honor World War II correspondents. The park will be rededicated, and the program will reconvene at Vernon R. Alden Library for the reopening of the Cornelius Ryan Room at 4 p.m. Ryan was a friend and colleague of Wilhelm’s. The room contains mementos from Ryan’s career, which included the D-Day landing and writing the books “The Longest Day” and “A Bridge Too Far” that were turned into blockbuster films. Guest speakers are retired Scripps-Howard Newspapers foreign correspondent and D.C. bureau chief Peter Copeland, Scripps journalism alum and Russia correspondent for The Associated Press James Heintz, and a director of the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation and Pyle cousin Steve Maschino. Pyle reported for Scripps-Howard Newspapers and was the most famous World War II correspondent. The event is part of the journalism school’s centennial celebration.
