Photo Gallery: Athens’ “Boys in Blue” honored with the rededication of a Civil War monument

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Members of the community gathered in era-appropriate attire Sunday to rededicate a refurbished monument to soldiers of the Civil War.

The ceremony took place at Union Street Cemetery in Athens to honor the soldiers buried in the cemetery.

The monument bears the inscription:

_{“Our Fathers” The “Boys in Blue”}

_{Who Rest in This Cemetery}

_{Dedicated By}

_{The Mrs. John Ellis Wool Tent No. 100}

_{Daughters of the Veterans of the Civil War. 1861-1865}

Civil War-era music was played and the audience sang a rendition of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
