TVC-Hocking Boys Standings
T-1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 6-3 (Conf. 3-0)
Belpre keeps on rolling to start the 2023-24 season. Last week was another strong one that the Golden Eagles picked up two more wins including one TVC-Hocking victory.
The first win of the week was over Fort Frye 57-53. Then, Belpre got a conference test against Southern who took the Golden Eagles to the end. Belpre prevailed by four remaining undefeated in conference play. Finally, they capped the week off with a loss to Division I opponent John Marshall.
The Golden Eagles will return to the court Thursday for a date with Wahama. — Andrew Bowlby
T-1. Trimble Tomcats | 4-2 (Conf. 3-0)
The Tomcats are proving that they can keep rolling until the end. Trimble found themselves in back-to-back overtime games this past weekend but only snagged the victory in one.
Last Friday, the Tomcats stayed in conference, playing against the Waterford Wildcats. Three Trimble players ended in double digits to help bring home the win and remain undefeated in conference. Their two top scorers were freshman Brady Jajczyk, who scored 19, and senior Micheal Clark, who racked up 17. The final score was 67-62.
The next day, Trimble traveled to Warren High School to play Fort Frye in the Warren Classic. This game also went down to the wire, but the Cadets pulled ahead in overtime to win 62-56.
The Tomcats’ next game will be in the Alexander Classic this Friday against Paint Valley. — Hailey Hollinger
3. Federal Hocking Lancers | 4-3 (Conf. 2-1)
This past week was not what the boys out of Federal Hocking were looking for. Starting off with a loss against Marietta on Tuesday night with a final score of 54-75. Andrew Airhart accounted for 21 points on the night, followed by Tariq Cottrill with 18 and 12 from Cameron Joy.
The Lancers would bounce back and pick up a much-needed TVC-Hocking win against the Eastern Eagles 73-59, with scoring coming from Tariq Cottrill who dropped 30, Mosiah Cottrill with 12 and both Cameron Joy and Andrew Airhart adding 10.
Federal Hocking would end the week with a loss to Warren in the Clash at the Colosseum 44-65. Tariq Cottrill would go on to put up 19 points, while Mosiah Cottrill would finish with 10.
Tariq Cottrill also was named player of the game for the Lancers. Federal Hocking will play back-to-back days this week, facing off with Western Latham on Friday night and then against Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. — Gavin Carrig
4. Waterford Wildcats | 2-4 (Conf. 1-2)
The Waterford Wildcats have been in the midst of a difficult stretch of basketball. After dominating Southern two weeks ago, the Wildcats have dropped two tight contests this week. Waterford traveled to Trimble to claim a conference win, but the Wildcats fell in by just three points, 59-62.
Looking for redemption, Waterford faced Caldwell in the Clash at the Coliseum, but once again, the Wildcats fell by single digits, 56-48.
Waterford will have a few days to rest and recover before they face cross-town rival Fort Frye on Friday and Nelsonville-York on Saturday. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-5. Southern Tornadoes | 3-3 (Conf. 0-3)
After a 2-2 start to the season, Southern’s last week was the best of the early year. They hosted conference-leading Belpre and gave them all they could handle falling short by just four.
Quickly, the Tornadoes bounced back blowing out Frontier 50-27. This week Southern will have a pair of out-of-conference games against Fort Frye and Ravenswood on Wednesday and Friday respectively. — Andrew Bowlby
T-5. Eastern Eagles | 0-7 (Conf. 0-3)
The Eastern Eagles boys are still yet to acquire a notch in the win column. The Eagles took on the Federal Hocking Lancers on Dec. 22 in Reedsville and were met again with a consistent issue, defense. The Lancers defeated the Eagles 73-59. Eastern has plenty of young talent. In order to win games in the future, they must solve issues on defense.
In the Eagles past three games, they have failed to allow a team to score less than 70 points. In order to take flight, the Eagles must go back to the drawing board, and defend their own basket. — Stephen Koroly
TVC-Hocking Girls Standings
1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 6-1 (Conf. 4-0)
The good times keep on rolling for the Belpre Girls as they are riding a four-game winning streak coming out of the holiday break. Three of those wins have come against TVC-Hocking teams. The average margin of victory during the win streak is also an astonishing 26.5.
Belpre has two games on back-to-back days this week against Meigs and Marietta. — Andrew Bowlby
T-2. Waterford Wildcats | 6-1 (Conf. 3-1)
The Lady Wildcats faced a gauntlet this week with both Federal Hocking and Warren on their schedule. In the first of those contests, Waterford dropped a home game to the Lady Lancers after squandering an early lead. Despite the loss, Avery Wagner continued her excellent season, totaling 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats had yet another tough test against the Warriors, but this time, it was Waterford who emerged as the victors. In a double overtime thriller, the Wildcats’ suffocating defense held the Warriors to 39 points in six quarters in the 41-39 victory. Kendall Sury compiled 15 points and Wagner put together a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Waterford will take on Fisher Catholic on Thursday, and they will face a familiar foe in the form of the South Gallia Rebels. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-2. Federal Hocking Lancers | 7-3 (Conf. 3-1)
Federal Hocking had a couple of massive games this past week. The Lady Lancers began with a loss against Warren on Monday night by a score of 26-36. Federal Hocking’s defense was not bad on the night, but the offense seemed to struggle, as shots were just not falling. Brenlee Cottrill led the team with a high of nine points.
The Lancers then bounded back in arguably the biggest way possible, coming away with the win against Waterford on Thursday 44-38. Federal Hocking were led once again by Cottrill, as she finished with 19 points, followed closely behind by Takira Walker with 10 and McKayla Nelson with nine.
The Lancers would end the week with a tough loss against Fort Frye in the Clash at the Colosseum in Warren, by a final score of 35-48, with Cottrill being named the Lancers player of the game.
Federal Hocking only has one game this upcoming week, as they get set to take on Vinton County at home on Thursday night. — Gavin Carrig
4. Trimble Tomcats | 3-4 (Conf. 1-2)
The lady Tomcats played Miller at home last Monday and put an end to their four-game losing streak, winning 57-20. This is the most points the Tomcats have scored so far this season.
The Tomcats were set to play their fourth in-conference game against the Eastern Eagles last Thursday. The game was canceled due to illness and injury on the lady Eagles’ squad. This game has not yet been rescheduled.
Trimble’s next on-the-court appearance will be in the Marietta Classic this Thursday when they take on the Meigs Marauders. — Hailey Hollinger
5. Eastern Eagles | 0-8 (Conf. 0-3)
The young lady Eagles are still winless through eight games this season. With no games played in the last week. The Eagles must take this time to rest and display promise for the future in their upcoming games.
Minimal success is expected this year from the Eagles, but young players acquiring more experience will be beneficial for the Eagles in the long run. — Stephen Koroly
6. Southern Tornadoes | 2-6 (Conf. 0-4)
Southern played only one game last week, and it wasn’t an easy one. The Tornadoes were tasked with playing the TVC-Hocking leading Belpre. Southern could never get it going and lost 56-30.
This week, Southern will travel to Northwest in one of their final non-TVC opponents of the season. — Andrew Bowlby
