Gov. Kasich Says Administration Is Reviewing Best Practices For Fracking
< < Back to gov-kasich-says-administration-reviewing-best-practices-frackingOhio Governor John Kasich is promising new legislation to protect the state from possible pollution related to fracking.
Governor Kasich spoke to reporters in Columbus this morning and said "tough regulations" are needed so increased drilling activity does not harm the environment.
But not "extreme laws," says Kasich, who insists he does not want to drive drilling companies out of Ohio because they can significantly boost the economy for years to come.
"We've got to handle this right," he says.
The Governor adds, his administration is looking at "best practices" in other states to see if they might be implemented here.
WOUB News also asked legislative leaders about fracking legislation.
Republican Senate President Tom Niehaus says one bill already has been passed and signed into law but he does not rule out others.
However, he calls for a "measured response."
House Minority Leader Armond Budish took a stronger position, saying Ohio's regulations are not sufficient and the state needs to know more about possible hazards.
