TVC-Hocking Boys Standings

1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 8-5 (Conf. 5-0)

The TVC-Hocking leaders continue to maintain pace at the top of the conference this week with a 15-point win over Waterford. The victory came away from Belpre, improving the Golden Eagles road record to a perfect 5-0 this season.

Belpre has a showdown in Pomeroy with TVC-Ohio opponent Meigs on Tuesday. Then, on Friday, they will look to remain perfect in conference play with a date against Eastern. — Andrew Bowlby

2.. Federal Hocking Lancers | 8-5 (Conf. 4-1)

Federal Hocking had three games this past week, going 2-1 in those matchups. The Lancers took down Alexander on Tuesday night by a score of 75-40, with Tariq Cottrill dropping 30 and Andrew Airhart with 24.

In the next contest the team went into Trimble and came out with a hard-fought win 74-62. Airhart put up 26, Cameron Joy added 13 while Cottrill with 12.

Federal Hocking then capped off the week with a loss to a very tough South Webster team 47-63. Andrew Airhart went on to put up 33 points on the night, along with reaching 1000 career points milestone. —  Gavin Carrig

3. Trimble Tomcats | 8-4 (Conf. 3-2)

It was all gas and no breaks for the Trimble Tomcats this week, with two non-conference games and one conference game. Last Tuesday, the Tomcats secured a 63-43 victory over the Wellston Golden Rockets.

Three days later, Trimble faced the Federal Hocking Lancers. The Lancers were the TVC-Hocking champions last season, making this a long-anticipated game for the Tomcats. While both teams fought hard, the Lancers overcame Trimble 74-62. The Tomcats will have another chance to hand Federal Hocking a loss towards the end of the season. Trimble was able to end the week on a high note with a 63-50 win over River Valley on Saturday. Levi Weber stood out, contributing 16 points.

Next week the Tomcats will have a similar game layout with games on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Their Friday game is against Southern, which will be their only in-conference play of the week.  — Hailey Hollinger

4. Waterford Wildcats | 6-6 (Conf. 2-3)

The Wildcats had a rough start to the week, as they had to face the TVC-Hocking top dogs, the Belpre Golden Eagles. Waterford struggled to find their groove offensively, being limited in a 52-37 defeat.

Their fortunes improved on Saturday with their second victory over Frontier High School this year. The Wildcats thrashed Frontier en route to a 62-39 rout. Jarrett Armstrong dropped 24 points in the contest, making him the all-time leading scorer in Waterford boys basketball history.  Charlie Ihlenfeld

5. Southern Tornadoes | 6-7 (Conf. 1-4)

Southern had a busy weekend playing on back-to-back days. Friday, they took on Eastern getting their first conference win of the year in a tight 57-52 affair. Saturday featured a non-conference battle with Glenwood that the Tornadoes earned their fifth victory of the year.

Southern won’t play again until this Friday when they travel to Trimble to take on the Tomcats. — Andrew Bowlby

6. Eastern Eagles | 1-10 (Conf. 0-5)

The Eastern Boys had a full week off after falling short to the Waterford Wildcats with a 55-53 loss on Jan. 5. The Eagles returned on Jan. 12 and they were met with another conference matchup against the Southern Tornadoes. The boys suffered another close loss, losing 57-52.

The Eagles margin of score in their past three games has only been three points. The boys have kept games close, and they’ve also held their past three opponents to under 60 points. This team is beginning to come together, the next step the Eagles must take is finishing games in the fourth quarter.

If they can continue playing solid defense and finish close games, we may see a more successful squad in Reedsville as the season progresses. —  Stephen Koroly

TVC-Hocking Girls Standings

T-1. Waterford Wildcats | 11-2 (Conf. 5-1)

The Wildcats got off to a hot start this week, thrashing the Eastern Eagles 54-18 on Thursday. Kendall Sury continued her torrid stretch, tallying 14 points during the road visit. Avery Wagner kept up her All-Ohio campaign, compiling 13 points against the Eagles. That victory improved Waterford to 5-1 in the TVC-Hocking standings.

Their toughest test came this Saturday when the Wildcats faced the fifth overall team in Division Three, the Waynedale Golden Bears. Waterford fell in a close contest to Waynedale 41-32. Wagner had 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss, but it was not enough to propel the Wildcats past the Golden Bears.

Waterford has a loaded slate next week, staring down Parkersburg South, Linsly and conference-rival Trimble.  Charlie Ihlenfeld

T-1. Federal Hocking Lancers | 10-3 (Conf. 5-1)

The Lady Lancers only had one game this past week, but it was one of the most important games of the entire season, taking on conference rivals and top of the table foes Belpre. In the first mathcup, the Golden Eagles took this contest by a score of 63-49, but Federal Hocking was not looking to repeat this same fate in the second meeting.

Brenlee Cottrill continued her fantastic season by dropping 25 points, along with Takira Walker adding 20 and McKayla Nelson with 15, as the Lancers took this one by a final score of 66-37. Federal Hocking come into this week winners of three straight, and will look to continue that with matchups against Meigs and Eastern. —  Gavin Carrig

3. Belpre Golden Eagles | 7-6 (Conf. 4-2)

The slide for Belpre continues as the Golden Eagles have now lost five consecutive games including two against TVC-Hocking teams. Belpre began the week on the road facing Federal Hocking. From the start, the Golden Eagles were outmatched and ended up losing 66-37.

On Saturday the Golden Eagles had an opportunity to bounce back against the TVC-Ohio leader Athens. While they did keep the game much closer, they still fell short 56-44. CHECK. Belpre will have some time off because of cancellations to try and fix the problems they have been having during the current losing streak. — Andrew Bowlby

4. Trimble Tomcats | 3-7 (Conf. 1-3)

The Trimble Lady Tomcats got more rest than scheduled after a game cancelation on Thursday. The Tomcats were scheduled to play the Southern Tornadoes but the game was canceled due to illness and injury. The game has been rescheduled and will be played on Jan. 20 at 12 p.m.

There was still action to be had on Saturday, when Trimble went up against Nelsonville-York for the second time this season. Tomcat Rilynn Fouts lead the team with 11 points and one block. Although Trimble kept the scoring gap closer than they did in their last meeting with the Buckeyes, they weren’t able to come out with a win. Nelsonville-York won 58-42.

This upcoming week the Tomcats will play River Valley on Wednesday and Southern on Saturday.  — Hailey Hollinger

5. Southern Tornadoes | 3-9 (Conf. 1-4)

Southern’s first game of the week against Trimble was canceled and will be played later this week. The only other game on the schedule for the Tornadoes was against Meigs.

The Tornadoes and Marauders battled till the end, but Meigs pulled out the slim 45-42 victory. Andrew Bowlby

6. Eastern Eagles | 1-12 (Conf. 0-5)

The Eastern Girls have fallen short in three straight games after collecting their first win of the season versus Berne Union. The Eagles kept it very close against the Meigs Marauders, losing by only seven points in a 55-48 loss.

The next two games were not as kind to the Eagles. The ladies lost by 36 points to the reigning TVC-Hocking champions Waterford Wildcats. Two days later, the Eagles suffered a 51-point loss to the Minford Falcons (10-3).

The lady Eagles are still finding their identity. Experience can only help the Eagles and with such a young squad firstyear head coach Jim Simpson must look forward to his young athletes evolving and finding their roles within this squad.  — Stephen Koroly
