TVC-Hocking Boys Standings
T-1. Federal Hocking Lancers | 11-5 (Conf. 5-1)
Federal Hocking has had a week to remember, going 3-0 in three games played. The Lancers opened up play with a matchup against Nelsonville-York on Tuesday night, winning that one 72-65. Without Tariq Cottrill, other players needed to step up, and they did just that. Andrew Airhart led the way with 29 points, while Evan McPherson dropped 17, and Cameron Joy added 14.
Federal Hocking then welcomed conference foes in the Belpre Golden Eagles into Stewart for a massive game on Friday. The Lancers would come out on top 71-66. Airhart once again led the way with 20, while Joy added 18 and Cottrill with 17. They then closed the week with a feisty win against Vinton County by a final score of 68-62. Airhart would finish with 28 while Cottrill added 17 himself. — Gavin Carrig
T-1. Belpre Golden Eagles | 8-6 (Conf. 5-1)
After having two straight weeks off, Belpre returned to the court in a high-stakes TVC-Hocking matchup with Federal Hocking on Friday. The Golden Eagles took multiple punches in the first half and trailed big in the game.
While they did make a push to get back into the game in the second, they were just never able get out of the hole they dug. It is the only conference loss of the season for Belpre.
The Golden Eagles have two games against league opponents this week hosting both Eastern and Southern with opportunities to reestablish themselves at the top of the conference. — Andrew Bowlby
3. Trimble Tomcats | 8-4 (Conf. 3-2)
The Trimble Tomcats traveled to Reedsville this past Friday for their first conference game in two weeks. The Eastern Eagles and the Tomcats were neck and neck for most of the game, but it boiled down which squad could capitalize on the others’ mistakes the most. Escaping the nest was a difficult task, but they pulled it off 46-43.
Ball security has been a hot topic for Trimble all season long, and their goal each game is to not let their turnover count exceed 12. In the Tomcats game against the Meigs Marauders last Saturday, they met their turnover goal, but they could not bring home the win. Trimble didn’t regain their footing in the second half after going down by 12 in the second quarter. The Marauders snapped the Tomcats four-game winning streak, taking the game 61-47.
Trimble has more conference play coming up this week. The Tornadoes will touchdown in Glouster on Tuesday, and Trimble has a catfight scheduled for Friday at Waterford. — Hailey Hollinger
4. Waterford Wildcats | 7-7 (Conf. 3-3)
The Waterford Wildcats got their share of redemption in close games this week. After a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds to Caldwell, the Wildcats found themselves in a dogfight with the Southern Tornadoes on Friday night.
With three minutes remaining in the contest, the Tornadoes rallied back from an 11-point halftime deficit to take a four-point lead. Waterford kept their composure, and junior Max Roberts hit two clutch buckets to tie the game, and Jared Heiss iced the game with a free throw, giving Waterford a much needed 40-39 victory.
The Wildcats will have to be ready for two intense contests next week as they host the conference-leading Federal Hocking Lancers and a team they are seeking revenge against, the Trimble Tomcats. It should be an action-packed week.— Charlie Ihlenfeld
5. Southern Tornadoes | 8-8 (Conf. 1-5)
The Southern boys had a strong week winning a pair of games over non-conference teams to get their record back up to 8-8. They beath both Miller and South Gallia to begin and end the week respectively.
Friday night’s game may have been the most entertaining of the week for the Tornadoes. Hosting Waterford, the two went down to the wire in a defensive affair that saw the Wildcats escape with a 40-39 win.
After being home for the week in Racine, Southern is on the road for two against Trimble and Belpre this week. — Andrew Bowlby
6. Eastern Eagles | 2-12 (Conf. 0-7)
After picking up a huge win over the Wellston Golden Rockets, the Eastern Eagles headed into West Virginia to take on the Wahama White Falcons. After losing 64-41 earlier in the season to the Falcons, the Eagles faced a similar fate on Tuesday night losing 67-41. Eastern in this game was only down two points at halftime but poor shooting and a lack of perimeter defense lead to the Eagles defeat.
Eastern then tipped off on Friday night against TVC-Hocking foe the Trimble Tomcats. The Eagles lost once again in a nail-biter, 46-43. Eastern capitalized off of Trimble errors for most of the game but down the wire, poor free throw shooting grounded the Eagles making this their twelfth loss of the season. — Stephen Koroly
TVC-Hocking Girls Standings
T-1. Waterford Wildcats | 14-2 (Conf. 7-1)
This week was the calm before the storm for the Waterford Wildcats. With only one game on the schedule, Waterford took care of business on the road against the Trimble Tomcats. In a 44-26 victory, junior Kendall Sury shined, leading the way with 20 points.
Their next challengers will be the class of Southeast Ohio basketball. First, the Newark Catholic Green Wave on Monday. Newark Catholic is 15-0 and holds the top position in the Division IV Central District by a wide margin. Waterford, the number-one-ranked team in the Division IV Southeast region needs wins like this to hold off teams like Portsmouth Notre Dame.
That is not the only challenge for the Wildcats next week. On Thursday, Waterford will have revenge on their mind. After a 44-38 loss at home to the Federal Hocking Lancers on Dec. 21, the streak of nine consecutive TVC-Hocking titles, excluding the COVID season, is in serious jeopardy for the Wildcats. A win would put them just one victory over Belpre away from clinching an outright title. A loss would almost certainly dash their chances at a title. It will be fascinating to watch how this week of basketball goes for Waterford. — Charlie Ihlenfeld
T-1. Federal Hocking Lancers | 14-4 (Conf. 7-1)
The Lady Lancers have had a busy week as well, starting off Wednesday with a non-league loss to Frontier by a score of 28-42. Federal Hocking then bounced back the night after with a blowout win over Southern 47-6. Brenlee Cottrill scored 13 with McKayla Nelson adding 11. The Lancers did not allow a single field goal against Southern in the game, all of their points came from the charity stripe.
Federal Hocking then closed the week out in style with a 59-37 win over Southeastern. Takira Walker led the way with 21 points, while Cottrill added 18. — Gavin Carrig
3. Belpre Golden Eagles | 8-7 (Conf. 5-2)
With only one game on the schedule this past week, Belpre took care of business against Eastern 63-18 Thursday.
A confidence-boosting win sending the Golden Eagles into an important final two weeks of the season. They will start the week with a game vs Muskingum-Valley League opponent Morgan.
And on Thursday, Southern will be in town for the final home TVC game of the year. — Andrew Bowlby
4. Trimble Tomcats | 4-11 (Conf. 2-4)
The Trimble lady Tomcats had four games this past week, two in-conference and two cross-conference. On Monday, the Tomcats traveled to McArthur and lost 63-29. Despite Trimble’s efforts early on, the Vikings were able to increase the lead and make a comeback out of reach.
On Wednesday, the Tomcats were able to bring home a much needed 48-34 conference win against the Eastern Eagles.
The next day, Waterford and Trimble clashed claws in the second meeting of the cats. The first time these two met, the Wildcats won 54-22. The result this time around didn’t vary much, as Waterford won 44-26.
After having three games in four days, the Tomcats had one more day off before traveling to Albany to play the Alexander Spartans. The Spartans defended their home court and won 51-31.
This upcoming week Trimble’s schedule is similar. They’ll play four games in six days with Wellston, Southern, Eastern, and Alexander as their opponents. — Hailey Hollinger
5. Southern Tornadoes | 3-13 (Conf. 1-6)
The Southern girls were challenged with a difficult slate of games over the last week.
The Tornadoes started the week on the road in Gallipolis vs Gallia Academy. They then hosted the TVC-Hocking leading Federal Hocking Lancers before concluding with a border battle with Ravenswood.
Southern will face off against Wahama and Belpre this week. — Andrew Bowlby
6. Eastern Eagles | 1-12 (Conf. 0-5)
The Eagles were faced with a back to back this week. Going against Trimble on Wednesday and Belpre on Thursday. Against the Tomcats, the Eagles suffered a 48-34 loss. This marked their seventh in-conference loss this season.
Eastern was right back the next night with another opportunity to earn their first conference win at Belpre. In the battle of the Eagles, Eastern suffered a massive defeat. The Eagles kept this game close in the first quarter, but Belpre head coach Regina Leftwich demanded her team to step up on defense.
This resulted in the lady Eagles only scoring three points in the second half, all three coming from the charity stripe. The young Eagles lost by 45 points with a final score of 63-18. — Stephen Koroly
