Author Ron Luce speaks on new book, ‘The Millfield Mine Disaster’ at Little Professor
February 10 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Millfield Mine Disaster Revisited
In his new book (January 2024), The Millfield Mine Disaster, Ron Luce, former Director of the Athens County Historical Society and Museum, tells the history of the original Poston Mine No. 6 and its subsequent status as Sunday Creek Coal Company Mine No. 6. Ohio’s worst mine disaster occurred at this mine on Wednesday, November 5, 1930, resulting in the deaths of 82 men (including the president and other leaders of the Sunday Creek Coal Company).
Luce carefully explores the history of the mine itself and then provides details about the 1930 disaster as documented by experts from the Ohio Bureau of Mines and the US Mine Bureau. Additionally, he provides information about the people involved, including names and personal information about the men who died.
Published by History Press, the book explores not only what happened on that fateful day, but how and why 82 men died, 56 women became widows, and 137 dependents became fatherless in an instant. This book pulls together all of the facts for the first time to tell what occurred when a major corporation put profit ahead of worker safety.
“I wrote this book to get past ninety-four years of misinformation about what happened, to honor and correctly identify the men who died, and to provide the public with documentation that has not been widely shared,” Luce said.
On Saturday, February 10th, Luce will be at The Little Professor Book Center from 2 to 5 p.m. to sign copies of the book and provide a short presentation.
The Millfield Mine Disaster is available in bookstores and online.
