Sethna attends the session looking for a way to make the most of the interaction.
“I started coming to WOUB Wednesdays during my sophomore year,” said Sethna. “The first one I attended was with Chicago Bulls Radio Play-by-Play Announcer Chuck Swirsky. After the talk, I got in touch with Chuck and started connecting with him. I talk with him every couple of weeks now and send him my work and get his feedback.”
WOUB Wednesdays are virtual discussions that are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. throughout the semester and are open to all current and former WOUB students as well as WOUB staff. A different former WOUB student is featured each session, and students hear about their career and can ask them questions.
“I love WOUB Wednesdays,” said Sethna. “I enjoy it because it gives me the chance to hear from people in the profession and the different perspectives they have. I like to hear about their career journeys because everybody’s journey is different. The best part is that they are all very open to supporting and helping current WOUB students. It’s very clear they are there to help the students. It’s such a great opportunity.”
Sethna, who grew up in northeast Ohio, hopes to work in sports media after graduation. He attended a recent WOUB Wednesday with Cleveland TV Reporter Joe Pagonakis and connected with Pagonakis after the talk to arrange an opportunity over spring break.
“Joe asked if I wanted to come to his station and shadow him for the day over break,” said Sethna. “Joe also got me in touch with their sports director. It was a fantastic experience.”
As Sethna approaches his senior year, he plans to take advantage of all the alumni support and connections he gets through WOUB. Sethna currently anchors sports for WOUB’s nightly half-hour news program, NewsWatch, and works on several WOUB sports programs, like SportsBeat, Gridiron Glory and The Bobcat Sports Showcase.
“My passion for sure is sports. I want to do sports journalism or sports media of some kind,” said Sethna. “I don’t know if I want to work for a TV or radio station or a professional sports team or college team. I also like podcasting and audio journalism. I’m not set on a specific job, but I plan to take advantage of as many opportunities as I can at WOUB and gain as many skills to make me more marketable.”
