ATHENS, OH –Myles Brooks, a senior at Ohio University studying music production and recording industry, is planning to continue his education by earning his MBA before making the move to New York City or Los Angeles to pursue his career goals. Originally from the Cleveland area, Brooks wants to work in the music industry after his time in Athens, Ohio.
“My dream goal is to make music,” said Brooks.
Brooks originally came to Ohio University as a restaurant, hotel and tourism major, but later switched to the music production and recording industry program after learning about it from a close friend.
“I may as well shoot for the stars while I’m here,” said Brooks. “If I’m around music, I’m happy.”
Over his time in the program, Brooks has learned that he is more interested in the business side of the music industry than the recording side. During his junior year, Brooks attended South by Southwest (SXSW), a conference best known for its celebration of the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture. In the Fall of 2023, Brooks also got involved at Brick City Records, a record label operated by School of Media Arts and Studies students and works with musicians to provide recording, promotion, distribution, publicity, and concert booking services. Through his experience at Brick City, Brooks has gained a lot of perspective on the music industry. Brooks also works with an Athens production group run by students called Midnight Music. Midnight Music books Ohio artists to perform at live venues and house shows.
“There’s not too much of a voice for underground rap artists in the area, and Midnight [Music] really created that voice.”
In the fall of 2023, Brooks also joined WOUB as a part of the TV production crew. Recently, Brooks has stepped into the floor director role.
As Brooks ends his undergraduate career at Ohio University, he encourages incoming freshmen to embrace the college experience.
“I think college was beneficial for me, I have a lot more confidence in where I’m going with my career,” said Brooks. “College gives you the opportunity to think about your career.”
