Athens ‘Summer of Heat’ Climate Ribbon Project event

July 10 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

(For more info about this planned event contact Carrie Gibbons, Third Act Ohio Coordinating Committee member, 513-543-8770)

Join us for a SUMMER OF HEAT Action in Athens:

When: July 10th, 11:30am to 1:00pm

Where: At the Athens County Courthouse and Chase Bank

Why: We refuse to stay silent while JPMorgan Chase, still the #1 investor of fossil fuel in the world since the Paris Climate Accords, pumped another $40.8 Billion dollars into fossil fuel companies in 2023.  This is supercharging the climate emergency!

Also, join us for an interactive art activity, the Climate Ribbon Project, which allows us to grieve what each of us stands to lose to Climate Chaos, and affirms our solidarity as we unite to fight against it.

Please come join what promises to be an informative and lively event.  Meet other Ohio Third Actors, and help get the message to Chase Bank that Ohioans say:

NO! to funding of fossil fuels

NO! to stealing our children’s and grandchildren’s futures

YES! to a total pivot to funding for (true!) renewables.

This “Elders Week” event is part of the Summer of Heat campaign’s national effort from Climate Defenders, and co-sponsored by Third Act and other organizations.

The “Summer of Heat” campaign, which kicked off in NYC June 10th, is turning up the heat on the issue of banking our economies on fossil fuels and petrochemicals. The campaign’s demands are not new but they remain crucial if the world is to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Made up of a large coalition of groups and organizations from all around the country, this campaign is organizing protests all summer long in order to voice, loud and clear, these critical demands: that Wall Street banks and corporations halt their financing/insuring of fossil fuel expansion and increase, exponentially (6X current levels), their investments in renewable energy projects – while respecting the rights of frontline communities and the sovereignty of indigenous groups impacted by these projects.

Further, as stated on SummerOfHeat.org’s website, “Wall Street must acknowledge its role in fueling climate chaos and environmental racism around the world and pay into a climate reparations fund, such as the UNFCCC’s Loss and Damage Fund.

According to  the 2024 Banking on Climate Chaos report: “The world’s 60 biggest banks committed $6,900,000,000,000 over 8 years to the fossil fuel industry [since the Paris climate accords], driving climate chaos & causing deadly local community impacts.” Chase invested another $40.8 billion in FF expansion during 2023.

The clarion call for “Planet over Profit!” is ringing out everywhere this summer…

Third Act is one of the many organizations involved in this summer long campaign. This week in the campaign is titled “Elders Week”. Third Act Ohio’s 4 climate events this week include: Cleveland (July 8), Columbus (July 9), Athens (July 10) and Cincinnati (July 10, evening).
