The first set started out head-to-head. Both teams kicked off the game with strong defense. With a powerful hit from Ava McCall, the Spartans began to pave a path and find their way to come out on top.
Alexander’s Marissa Beach went on a seven-point service run that put the Spartans up 16 to 8. To close out the first set, Spartan Meena Juedes comes away with a monster block and Alexander won the set 25 to 11.
Both Alexander and Meigs started the second set on fire, going point for point all the way up to 11 to 11. With everyone on their toes Alexander found their way, forcing Meigs to call a timeout to regroup their team. The Marauders hoped to ice Spartan Maddy Penrod after her 11 point service run. Although the timeout did allow Meigs to gain a few more points, it wasn’t enough to win them the set and the Spartans took the second set 25 to 15.
The Marauders entered the third set looking for revenge. There were many long rallies back and forth at the start of the set. Both teams came out with many strong plays, refusing to let the ball hit the floor. Ultimately, Meigs was not able to hold their own against Kayden Bean’s 11 serves and 3 aces toward the end of the set. The set closed out 25 to 19 handing the overall win to the Alexander Spartans.
The Spartans will hold this win high in their next few games. Coach Lauren Hill says, “Every game that we have from here on out has high stakes.”
Meigs hosts the Eastern Eagles on Wednesday and Alexander hosts the Wellston Golden Rockets on Thursday.
