State Fire Officials Warning College Students To Review Safety Practices
< < Back to state-fire-officials-warning-college-students-review-safety-practicesA fire that critically injured two people in an apartment near Ohio State University has prompted the state fire marshal to urge college students across Ohio to review safety practices.
Columbus fire officials say the Tuesday morning injured 34-year-old Chris Lennon and 31-year-old Jessica Walker, who suffered burns over 60 percent of her body. It is believed to be accidental pending further investigation.
Fire Marshal Larry Flowers says students often face increased responsibility for the first time when entering college and urges adults to discuss fire prevention and safety.
Flowers' office says Campus Firewatch reports 146 campus-related fire fatalities nationwide since Jan. 1, 2000, with 85 percent in off-campus housing. Some common factors are missing or disabled smoke alarms, careless disposal of smoking materials and impaired judgment from alcohol consumption.
