CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WOUB) — After 21 games, the Federal Hocking Lancers began their tournament campaign against the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs. After beating Paint Valley in the first round, the Mustangs ran into the one seed Lancers in the District Semi-Finals. Federal Hocking began their tournament run, beating Lynchburg-Clay 68-53.
The Lancers got off to an uncharacteristically quick start compared to most of the regular season. The 2-3 zone defense from the Mustangs was picked apart by the Lancers. Midrange jumpers from Juni Ballew combined with effective behind the arc shooting from McKayla Nelson allowed Federal Hocking to get to a 23-11 lead to end the first quarter.
Lynchburg-Clay in the second grew into the game offensively. Addy Carraher made multiple three-pointers to try to cut the lead. But Federal Hocking was able to keep Lynchburg-Clay at arm’s reach by turning up the pace. Takira Walker at point guard, and Brenlee Cottrill playing more so as a wing, was able to facilitate open spaces in the Mustang defense. The Lancers went into the half up 37-23.
In the third quarter, Lynchburg-Clay was able to match punches for Federal Hocking but not able to effectively cut into the lead or mount an effective comeback. The Lancers kept their foot on the gas through four quarters in no small part to Laura Blower’s 16 points. Lily Ferguson’s 19 points were not enough for the Mustangs as their heroic season comes to an end at the hands of the Lancers.
After a convincing win, Federal Hocking’s tournament run is underway. They will face the Valley Indians in the District Finals on Feb. 28. Last year, the Federal Hocking Lancers won their first District Title since 1989 and are looking to repeat and go even further in the tournament.
