Ironton come out victorious in defensive battle against Archbishop McNicholas

IRONTON, Ohio (WOUB) – The Archbishop McNicholas Rockets traveled to face the Ironton Fighting Tigers in a cross-conference matchup where the Rockets fell in a defensive battle, 17-10.
The Rockets looked to set the tone on their first drive as quarterback Evan Sandfoss drove them down the field, including converting a fourth-and-13 at midfield. They would get deep in the red zone, but they could not cash all the way in as they would only get a field goal, giving them a 3-0 lead.
Ironton’s first drive did not go as smoothly as despite starting in good field position. McNicholas’s defense would hold them enough to force a punt.
On the Rockets’ next drive, the Ironton defense would make their presence known with Jacob Hughes getting to the quarterback for a disruptive sack, and it would make the McNicholas offense come up empty.
The Fighting Tigers looked like they would right their wrongs from their previous drive with a huge passing play, but it would come back due to holding. This would cancel out the play, and it would lead to another punt.
But after stopping the Rockets again, third time would indeed be the charm as Ironton would go 74 yards down the field, and quarterback Wyatt Wolfe would find Tyson Harvey on fourth and goal, putting the Fighting Tigers on the board and in the lead, 7-3 after the extra point.
For the rest of the first half, it would be a trade of great defense and equally costly penalties. Big plays getting erased by holding calls would end up being a theme, and the score would remain the same heading into halftime.
But in the end, Ironton would end up doing enough as they ended the night with a win, by a score of 17-10.
Archbishop McNicholas fall to 1-2, and they look to bounce back against Roger Bacon. While the Ironton Fighting Tigers remain perfect with a record of 3-0, and they look to continue against Somerset (KY).
