Chesapeake dominates Northwest and picks up first win of the season
< < Back toCHESAPEAKE, Ohio (WOUB)- – Both Chesapeake and Northwest entered Friday night 0-2 and hungry for their first victory of the season. Chesapeake proved to have the bigger appetite as they rolled the Mohawks, winning 35-6.
Chaos began on the second play from scrimmage, as Northwest running back Landon Hodge fumbled and Chesapeake recovered. On their first play from scrimmage, the Panthers capitalized on the turnover as quarterback K.J. McLain found wide receiver Jaden Washington on a deep pass into the endzone. After a missed extra point, the score was Chesapeake leading 6-0.
Northwest began the next drive with a solid start as receiver Caleb Nichols hauled in a big reception over the middle. However, the drive stalled as the Mohawks failed to convert a 4th and 3. Chesapeake faced the same offensive issues on their next possession, failing to convert a 4th and 11.
The sloppy football continued for both teams, as on the next drive the Mohawks threw three straight incompletions and were forced to punt. Chesapeake was able to one-up the Mohawks by fumbling as soon as they got the ball back. The Northwest momentum was short-lived as they got stifled on a 4th and 1. The first quarter came to an end after a combined two fumbles and three turnovers-on-downs between the two teams.
The second quarter was when Chesapeake started to run away with the game, as K.J. McLain threw for his second touchdown of the night and converted on the two-point-conversion as well, putting the Panthers up 14-0. The woes continued for Northwest as they fumbled, leading to a scoop and score for Chesapeake, putting them up 21-0.
On the next ensuing drive, the sloppy Mohawk football continued, as they fumbled yet again. This put Chesapeake in prime position to add another score to their lead to make it 28-0. The Panthers fumbled on their next drive but were able to hold the Mohawks before halftime.
Chesapeake scored their final touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter as Peyton Muncy hauled in a spectacular touchdown to make it 35-0. The two teams traded defensive stops before Northwest ended the game by scoring a touchdown on the final play of the game, making It 35-6.
Northwest, now 0-3, will face Wheelersburg next Friday at home. Chesapeake will be looking to continue their momentum next week as they host Dawson-Bryant.
