The Southern Tornados break over 50 yearlong losing streaks against the Trimble Tomcats

RACINE, OHIO (WOUB) – Southern hosted Trimble for their first conference matchup of the year on their homecoming night. The Tornados were able to secure a historic win over the Tomcats, 39-12.
The first quarter started strong for Southern as they were able to get a touchdown on the first drive by RB Jesse Sayre. The rest of the quarter was back and forth between both teams as nobody was able to get the upper hand. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7- 0, Tornados in the lead.
The second quarter picked up where the first quarter had left off with both teams making an unsuccessful drive. This stalemate was broken by Southern, who got another TD this time by WR Wyatt Templeton, bringing the score up to 14-0. The Tornados kept the momentum up by following it up with another TD by QB Colton Jones; unfortunately for Southern, their field goal was blocked, making the score 20-0. On the next drive, Trimble was finally able to get a TD by WR Kevin Bycofski. The Tomcats then went for two points but were unable to score, bringing the score to 20-6 with the Tornadoes still in the lead. Right before the second quarter ended, Southern was able to squeeze in another TD by TE Tanner Robinson, ending the second quarter, 26-6.
The third quarter was off to a strong start with Colton scoring another TD for the Tornadoes, bringing the score up to 33-6 for the start of the third quarter. Southern’s defense had the field locked down for this quarter as not only were they able to prevent the Tomcats from scoring, but they also got three interceptions throughout the quarter. The score at the end of the quarter was 33-6.
The fourth quarter started in a defensive gridlock as both teams struggled to make any progress. Southern was able to break this impasse as Colton again scored a TD for Southern, pushing the score to 39-6. Trimble wasn’t completely out of the match just yet, as they were able to score the final TD of the game by Kevin. This brought the final score to 39-12, with Southern securing a historic win over Trimble.
Trimble hopes to bounce back from this loss by going up against the Belpre Golden Eagles on Oct. 2 on their home turf. Southern aims to keep up the momentum by travelling to Waterford to face them on Oct. 2.
